Eyelash extensions are single faux eyelashes applied directly to the natural lash. They are placed close, but never touching, the lash line with a semi-permanent bonding adhesive. An extension is applied to a single lash, leaving the eyelashes and eyelids to move freely. They are applied carefully, one by one using specially designed tweezers. The whole process normally takes 90 - 180 minutes depending on how many lashes are applied.

Eyelash extensions can last for up to 5 weeks. However, if you wish to maintain the original look it is recommended to infill your eyelashes every 2 - 3 weeks. How long your eyelash extensions last depends almost entirely on how you care for them - removing makeup correctly, not wearing mascara, not using oil-based products near your eyes and not tugging/pulling at your eyelash extensions.

  1. Please avoid excessive caffeine before your appointment. If you are used to a set amount each day that is alright but having an extra cup of coffee or an energy drink before our appointment will make your eyes and body jittery. This will slow down the application process and will make it difficult to complete the service.
  2. Turn your phone on silent so that you may fully relax. You won't be able to check it while we are applying your lashes.
  3. Please avoid mascara, eyeliner and strip lashes for 24-48 hours before your appointment. Mascara or strip lash glue may take a few days to be fully removed. Debris on lashes can cause premature shedding of lash extensions because the adhesive will bond to the makeup and not your eyelash. Please wash your lashes and eyelids thoroughly with an oil-free facial cleanser the morning of our appointment or directly before.
  4. Makeup debris, oils, moisturizers or flakes of skin on lashes can cause premature shedding of the lash extensions and will greatly slow down the application process.
  1. LASH SHEDDING CYCLE
Much to our disappointment our lashes naturally shed and are replaced by new baby lashes, that begin to grow and fill in the space left by the lost lash. It takes them a little while to reach their optimal length, in the meantime you are left with an empty looking gap. The fact is, we will lose two to five of our natural lashes every single day! This process is totally normal and natural, but since lash extensions are attached directly to our natural lashes, together they must fall.
  2. USING MASCARA OR OTHER WATERPROOF MAKEUP
Mascara has been proven to break down the bonds of lash extension adhesive. Additionally waterproof mascara is super difficult to remove, without rubbing, pulling and tugging at the extensions. Makeup removers formulated to remove waterproof makeup and mascara will contribute to major fall out by breaking the lash adhesive bond due to their oil-based compound content.
  3. USING OIL BASED SKINCARE PRODUCTS
As mentioned in the previous point, using oil-based skincare products is a lash extension nightmare. Just like oily skin, oil-based products can break down the adhesive bond between your lash and the lash extension, causing instant fall out.
  4. OILY SKIN
Having oily skin can be a bummer. It has been known to contribute to issues with lash extensions application and adhesion. Very oily skin breaks down the adhesive bond by which the lash extension holds on to the natural lash, causing the extensions to have difficulty sticking strong. In rare cases, it can cause the lash extensions to resist adhesion entirely! If you have very oily skin, we recommend starting with a few lash extensions per eye to see how they adhere and maintain before spending your pennies on a full set. There's nothing more disappointing than having your pricey lash extensions fall after only a few days of wear.
  5. RUBBING EYES OR PULLING THE EXTENSIONS
If you suffer from dry eye and have a tendency to rub your eyes, your extensions will most likely fall out along with your natural lashes, when rubbed excessively. If your own lashes fallout along with the extension, there will be nothing left to attach new extensions to, until the next phase in lash regrowth. Prevent all rubbing of the eye and pulling of lashes when possible.
  6. HOW YOU SLEEP
How you sleep, or more importantly the position that you sleep in can be a contributing factor in premature lash extension loss. Those of us who sleep on our stomachs or in odd face down positions may experience issues retaining their lash extensions for the optimal length of time. While sleeping face down on a pillow, your lash extension will likely be pushed and bent out of shape not to mention rubbed with movement against the pillow. This force trauma will likely loosen the bond of the adhesive and cause fall out. A lash specific sleeping mask is a good way to prevent lash loss for stomach sleepers.
  7. IMPROPER LASH EXTENSION CARE
You should always follow proper lash extension care as advised by your lash stylist. Improper care like not removing dirt, debris or oil may cause lash extension loss. Neglecting to clean your extensions can cause infection and inflammation to occur at the base of the hair follicle. Brushing is another key step in lash extension care. You should brush your lashes with a spoolie/mascara wand as part of your daily routine but be careful and use gentle strokes when brushing.
  8. VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Some vitamins and supplements that help with hair, skin and nails may cause lashes to shed faster, causing your lash extensions to fall out quicker than expected.

Please remember that we shed 2-5 natural lashes a day, the shedding is more noticeable when you have extensions applied. It is also normal for a few lash extensions to pop off the natural lashes with brushing and every day wear. This is why we fill every lash possible so that it will still be full if you lose 3-5 a day. Lash extensions are not implants but semi-permanent enhancements that are meant to be touched up every 2-3 weeks.

A full set of eyelash extensions takes anywhere from 90 to 180 minutes to apply. It’s a big chunk of time, right? For classic lashes, we apply 70-100 individual eyelash extensions per eye. We use one pair of tweezers to isolate one of your natural lashes and another pair of tweezers to apply a single lash extension - doing this 70-100 times PER EYE! For volume - we take pride in hand making our fans which take extra time and apply the fan to an isolated lash.

No. Please do not bring extra people or pets. This is a time for you to relax and enjoy your treatment without any distractions.

No, we do not use pre-made fans or cluster lashes. Clusters are meant for short term use with temporary adhesive. Some pre-made fans can be damaging if not of high quality or heat bonded, they can take a shorter time as they are applied like a classic extensions. However you can not achieve a custom look, I take pride in hand-making all of my volume fans.

No! We take extra care to ensure that they are all applied individually and correctly to maintain your natural eyelash health. The eyelash extensions will fall off when your natural eyelash falls out, and so long as an appropriate weight extension has been applied, your natural lashes will grow out and fall out as per normal.

Unqualified technicians or beauty salons who do not specialise in eyelash extensions may be using excess amounts of glue, causing the lashes to be stuck together, or using cluster lashes and advertising them as "volume eyelash extensions" which are too heavy and damaging on the natural lashes. Please ask questions or do some research on the technician before getting eyelash extensions. And remember - "Cheap eyelash extensions are not good, and good eyelash extensions are not cheap!"

Eyelash extensions are a safe and non-invasive cosmetic procedure. We use a high-quality, low fume adhesive which is manufactured specifically for cosmetic use near the eye, and the adhesive does not actually ever touch your skin – as the extensions are glued to the eyelash hairs. Allergic reactions to the adhesive are very rare (1 in several thousand) and when they do present, are easily treated. In saying this, we do not recommend that pregnant women who have never had eyelash extensions before test out the procedure during their pregnancy. The reasons – firstly, the lash extension procedure requires you to lay flat on your back for over one hour; a position that is not recommended for  women in the advanced stages of pregnancy. It also requires that you lie quite still – which can be hard if you’re heavily pregnant! Secondly, if you were unlucky enough to have an allergic reaction, as your hormone levels do change and it is very common that you are more susceptible to reaction, your doctor may not be able to give you the required treatment due to your pregnancy, prolonging the reaction. However – if we have been doing your lashes here at Maddison Lashes and Brows and you become pregnant, there’s no problem continuing with the extensions – just let us know so that we can make sure you are comfortable at all times!
